Metsä Spring Advances Fibre Packaging With Amcor

Metsä Spring is advancing fibre-based food packaging through a collaboration with Amcor and G. Mondini, combining materials, barrier technology and machinery into an integrated tray system.

The solution brings together Muoto™ moulded fibre trays, Amcor’s barrier liners and top web films, and G. Mondini’s packaging equipment, targeting protein and chilled ready meal applications.

It will be demonstrated live at Interpack in Düsseldorf from May 7–13 on G. Mondini’s Trave® Streamline machine.

Integrated system for food packaging

The Muoto™ tray is designed to deliver structural strength and recyclability using wood fibre sourced from northern forests.

Combined with Amcor’s barrier technologies, the system supports modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) and skin packaging, helping extend shelf life while reducing plastic use.

Additional features include microwaveable and ovenable performance, as well as easy-peel functionality.

Scaling fibre-based solutions

The collaboration integrates Metsä Group’s fibre expertise with Amcor’s barrier capabilities and G. Mondini’s machinery, demonstrating how fibre-based packaging can be scaled for demanding food applications.

The development reflects broader industry efforts to replace plastic with renewable materials without compromising performance.
