European Packaging Paper Prices Rise To €100/Ton
May 27, 2026
The European packaging paper market recorded price increases in April 2026 as producers responded to higher raw material, energy, and logistics costs.
Sappi Europe announced price increases of €50-70 (US$57-80) per ton, followed by an additional €65 (US$74) per ton increase from mid-April. SCA also increased kraftliner prices by €100 (US$114) per ton from 1 April.
Average market price movements during April were lower overall, with kraftliner prices increasing €30 (US$34) per ton, testliner rising €90 (US$103) per ton, and containerboard prices increasing €40 (US$46) per ton month-on-month.
According to suppliers, demand for packaging paper in March and April performed better than expected, although the overall market trend remained weak. Producers used the period to implement price increases aimed at improving margins and offsetting elevated production costs.
Raw materials remained one of the main cost drivers. Pulp prices entering 2026 were supported by supply constraints and firm supplier pricing, increasing costs for virgin fibre grades, including kraftliner.
In recycled grades, waste paper prices across Europe increased between 15 per cent and 30 per cent during April, depending on grade and market.
Energy costs also continued to affect production economics. The European paper sector remains heavily exposed to natural gas and electricity prices, which stayed above levels seen in competing regions. Market volatility during March and April added further pressure to operating costs, particularly in recycled containerboard production, where energy consumption is higher.
Logistics costs also increased during the period as higher diesel prices raised freight and transportation expenses.
Producers stated that rising raw material, energy, and logistics costs collectively contributed to the latest packaging paper price increases across the European market.
